Madwort's Menagerie

23rd Oct 16 // 17:00

After a momentary glimpse in a misfiring big band rehearsal, Tom Ward had been bugged by an overheard snippet of a weird quartet comprising bass clarinet, flute, trumpet and trombone. After adding 'cello and bass, Madwort’s Menagerie was formed; and features some incredible improvising musicians with a full spectrum of credits ranging from the London Improvisers Orchestra through Brass Mask, the Overground Collective, Quadraceratops and The Imaginary Delta to Sinfonia Cymru and the London Tango Orchestra.

HTrio // Inclusion Principle

24th Oct 16 // 18:00

Comprising three improvisers with contrasting backgrounds in jazz, contemporary classical music, and rock, HTrio breathes new life into the classic tenor sax/bass/drums format with a strong, unified group sound. Together they create long-form improvised pieces that range from the dreamlike (breathy multi phonics, bowed tones and singing bowls) to the direct (fast and dense free jazz) whilst retaining a strong sense of melody and structure.

Inclusion Principle operates in a space between electronics, nu-jazz, contemporary electroacoustic music and free improvisation. In performance you will hear pure jazz skill, electronic beats and areas of texture and abstraction all seamlessly woven into a fascinating and constantly shifting tapestry of sound.

This double bill is supported by Jazz North's Northern Line scheme.

Deemer // Alex Bonney

25th Oct 16 // 18:00

Alex Bonney is a trumpeter, electronic musician and recording/mix engineer and producer based in London. He grew up in the flight path of Concorde, instilling a deep attachment to subsonic frequencies. His latest solo release, Excavations and Demolitions has been described as "a compelling invitation to enter what we might think is a hostile, cold world: a concrete factory [...] as in all the best playgrounds, this is a thrilling carousel of discovery." (Late Junction, BBC R3)

The brain-child of Merijn Royaards and Dee Byrne, Deemer started life in 2006 as a weekly improvisation/electronics session in a warehouse in Hackney Wick. The project has since evolved into an installation/performance based electro-acoustic two-piece orchestra, whose aural narratives are created within fluid frameworks that map a trajectory in time, but leave the sonic textures and compositions entirely free and undetermined. Deemer employ, among other things, alto saxophone, analogue electronics, synths, drum machines, filters, effects and TV monitors, to instantly compose, activate space, and blur the boundaries between free jazz and sound installation.
